Why is it square?
Japan uses a 45x45mm square format for visa applications, unlike the rectangular formats used by most countries. This is specified on the official MOFA visa application form. Some consulates may also accept 35x45mm — check with your specific consulate if unsure.
Rules
- Expression: Neutral, mouth closed. No smiling.
- Glasses: Prescription glasses allowed if eyes are clearly visible with no glare. Tinted lenses and sunglasses not allowed.
- Eyes: Both eyes must be open and clearly visible.
- Ears: Both ears must be fully visible. Hair must not cover ears.
- Forehead: Must be fully visible. Hair must not cover the forehead.
- Head coverings: Not allowed unless for religious reasons.
- Background: Plain white. No patterns, shadows, or coloured backgrounds.
- Lighting: Even, no shadows on face or background.
- Recency: Taken within the last 6 months.
