Why is it square?

Japan uses a 45x45mm square format for visa applications, unlike the rectangular formats used by most countries. This is specified on the official MOFA visa application form. Some consulates may also accept 35x45mm — check with your specific consulate if unsure.

Rules

  • Expression: Neutral, mouth closed. No smiling.
  • Glasses: Prescription glasses allowed if eyes are clearly visible with no glare. Tinted lenses and sunglasses not allowed.
  • Eyes: Both eyes must be open and clearly visible.
  • Ears: Both ears must be fully visible. Hair must not cover ears.
  • Forehead: Must be fully visible. Hair must not cover the forehead.
  • Head coverings: Not allowed unless for religious reasons.
  • Background: Plain white. No patterns, shadows, or coloured backgrounds.
  • Lighting: Even, no shadows on face or background.
  • Recency: Taken within the last 6 months.
