Rules
- Expression: Neutral or natural smile with mouth closed. The US is more lenient on expression than most countries.
- Glasses: Not allowed. Removed from accepted items in 2016.
- Eyes: Both eyes must be open and clearly visible.
- Ears: Not required to be visible. Hair may cover ears.
- Head coverings: Not allowed unless for religious reasons. Face must be fully visible from forehead to chin.
- Background: Plain white or off-white. No patterns, shadows, or other people.
- Lighting: Even, no shadows on face or background.
- Recency: Taken within the last 6 months.

- Shadows on face or background
- Wearing glasses (including clear lenses)
- Photo is too dark or overexposed
- Head tilted or not facing camera directly
- Photo is older than 6 months
